Night Angel Trilogy Movie Fantasy Casting: Part One

This is very much wishful thinking at this point; the movie rights HAVE been bought, but there’s no guarantee and the casting, of course, probably won’t be anything similar to what I imagine. I really think the Night Angel trilogy would make a fantastic movie trilogy. The pacing is well-suited to the big screen, and after listening to the GraphicAudio it seems insanely plausible (although I don’t like every character’s voice).  Anyway, I started some serious daydreaming about the most suitable cast for a movie.

Feel free to agree, disagree or offer castings for characters I didn’t cover. SPOILER WARNING: Some of the names themselves are spoilerish, so if you hate spoilers of any sort and haven’t finished the trilogy, don’t read this.

Some people may not be exact on the physical appearances, but that’s what a little makeup wizardry is for. I did try to pick actors/actresses who suited the size of the characters; height isn’t super important, but I feel it would be wrong for Kylar to be taller than Durzo or Logan.

Durzo Blint

Paul Bettany, most recently of 'Legion'

He’s tall and has a pale, wispy beard when he grows one; he’s also a good actor. He would need makeup for the pockmarks and to make his face look more aged and weathered, but I think he could definitely pull off Durzo’s aloof intimidation. UPDATE 01/2/11: Kinda thinking Viggo Mortensen might fit the bill…anyone else?

Kylar Stern

This is a tough one. Personally, I think a fresh face would be the way to go, but I picked out some possibilities anyway. I know Kylar has blue eyes, but that’s what contacts are for. UPDATE 01/02/11: What about Alex Pettyfer, star of the upcoming I AM NUMBER FOUR? He’s only twenty and he’s not too tall (5’11″).

Ezio Auditore da Firenze of 'Assassin's Creed II'

Slap some blue contacts on him and get him to lose the accent, and he’s perfect.

Elene Cromwell

Mary Elizabeth Winstead, most recently of ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’

I think she exudes the proper ‘innocent’ air that I imagine Elene to have, and her eyes have the intensity required. She has mostly been in horror films, and in Scott Pilgrim and Sky High she is something of a bitch (which I don’t consider Elene to be), but I think this would help her pull off Elene’s holier-than-thou attitude.

Momma K

I think this one is almost as tough as Kylar. Sure, it’s not difficult to find women fifty years old who look ten years (or more) younger, but finding the right one is the real dilemma.

Monica Bellucci, the ultimate MILF (GMILF?)

I don’t remember much about Momma K’s description except that she’s about 50 but actually looks 10-15 years younger, and of course she’s stunning. Bellucci has that aura of sexual knowledge and can pull off Momma K’s confidence.

Jarl

Lee Thompson Young, who was in 3 episodes of season 8 of 'Scrubs'

In addition to being on a few episodes of Scrubs, it appears he is now a regular on the new, femme cop drama Rizzoli & Isles. Anyway, I consider it something that I remember him from just a few appearances on Scrubs. I think he has a pretty enough face to be Jarl, and he seems to be a good actor.

Logan Gyre

Chris Hemsworth of the upcoming ‘Thor’

I quite earnestly believe he is perfect for Logan. He’s really tall (6’3″), handsome, charismatic, but able to pull off being badass and still seem moral.

Jenine Gunder/Gyre

Another one I think is required to be a fresh face. Again, there are lots of busty young things in Hollywood, but Jeni has to be unconsciously sexy, and I think she should look very much her age. Well, maybe just a tad bit older for comfort’s sake.  And all I remember about Jeni’s appearance currently is that she showed some nice cleavage.

Sendhil Ramamurthy of 'Heroes'

I don’t quite remember how dark the Sethi are/aren’t, but I think this guy is appropriately handsome for Solon and he’s a good actor (have seen him on Psych as well as Heroes and he did well as different characters on both).

GodKing Garoth Ursuul

Daniel Day-Lewis, most recently of 'Nine' (word not number)

He’s a great actor and a great villain, and he looks very sinister without hair (GodKing is bald). He’s also tall (6’1″) so with some bulking up and proper perspective he could look as impressively big as the GodKing

Viridiana Sovari

Molotov Cocktease of 'The Venture Bros.'

Positively oozes sex appeal, plus she’s a deadly assassin already so she can bring that experience to the role.

Gemma Arterton, most recently of 'Prince of Persia'

She was also Strawberry Fields in Quantom of Solace, which is why I thought of her. She makes a foxy redhead, and despite the general blah crap that was the Prince of Persia movie, she’s shown some range in her acting skills (I said some…but she has experience in the fantasy-esque genre as she was also in the remake of Clash of the Titans).

If a character’s not listed, I couldn’t think of someone to cast at the moment. I hope to do a Part Two later with a few more characters.  There’s a forum discussion on Brent Weeks’ website, but I’m not familiar with a lot of the people on the list and even though some of them looked right I don’t feel comfortable just tossing someone into my list because they look right.
